of this statuesque perennial that looks a bit like a this- tle and is commonly called globe thistle. It’s just the thing for the back of your white garden as the ghostly flowers emerge from the gray green foliage like mist.

shrub is just 36 inches tall but it is covered in white blooms from April to May. Rated Zone 4, it’s being sold as a container plant in some regions because it blooms on old wood.
