A measure of backyard sophistication can be achieved with some paving stones and a bit of lattice used as a privacy wall.

Careful placement of shade or wind-blocking trees and shrubs is part of the strategy, but your space may also benefit from the construction of a garden shed or the placement of a gazebo on the windward side of the patio.

movable surfaces because snow doesn’t stick to it as it does to cement. The pavers also come in a variety of colours and finishes. Patios

Patios, too, are becoming an absolute

must for every homeowner. Even those who build decks off the back entrance are adding patios at ground level, either by a pool or surrounding an outdoor fireplace or as the floor for a seating area, outdoor kitchen or a hot tub. This becomes the focal point of the outdoor living space, often much more used than the deck. In addition to the stamped poured con-

crete, paving stones and patio blocks are popular for patios with many homeowners. They are versatile and easy to install. They also come in many colours, patterns and configurations that can work well with your home décor. Today, paving stones are being manufactured to look like antique stone or just about any other stone you can name. Patio considerations

Planning this space needs to include thoughts of sun and shade, of wind direc- tion, neighbours’ eyes and what shelters you will need to keep the space usable for as much time as possible.

10 • Early Spring 2012

Careful placement of shade or wind- blocking trees and shrubs is part of the strategy, but your space may benefit from the construction of a garden shed or the placement of a gazebo on the windward side of the patio. Think about how this space will complement your home and choose colours that harmonize. Raised gardens will soften the space and

make it more livable. They will also bring some of your favourite small plants and herbs closer to eye level and allow the use of trailers and other spillers in a whole new way. Furnishing the patio is not just a matter

of hauling in a table and some chairs. You will want lighting and perhaps a sound sys- tem. You may wish to build in permanent hangers for baskets or shelf space for herbs and other plants. Many people build patios around old trees, circling the tree-trunk with a bench. If this is going to be an outdoor dining space, you will have to think about barbecues, perhaps gas hookups and maybe even some outdoor kitchen cupboards and plumbing. Early spring, before planting season starts,

is the perfect time to make these improve- ments.
