her village after the killing of her family, who out of desperation becomes a call girl in a sleazy nightclub. American friends buy GI Chris her services for a night and they have a true connection, changing their lives forever. During the fall and evacuation of Saigon, the two are separated leaving Kim behind. Desperate for her son to have a future in America with his father, Kim makes the ultimate sacrifice. saving her from Pa in those situations. However, when Celie sings “I’m Here,” she is placed in a situation which she has to save herself. That is something I feel every- one goes through in general—everyone has that moment in which you cannot ask someone else for their opinion, it’s really up to you to stand up! It’s something I needed to do for myself—just having had a breakup and knowing I had to stand up and be on my own out here in California and just do it! (Laughs). This character, having being on her own is the most beautiful part to me—every night it helps me get further on in my own life to sing that song. It sort of seems symbolic in nature that you’re giving a fresh take on the role this spring…. I don’t know the thought process of Celebration on doing this particular play at

this time of year, but I do believe that everything happens for a reason. We may not know that reason until later in the process or even afterwards, however, it is a beau- tiful thing that it’s at a time of new beginnings this year. I quote the horoscopes, “It’s supposed to be a year of change and taking chances.” I think that Celebration took a big chance in doing a play like this at that venue. Everybody took a chance doing something this heavy in such a small place—I know they took a chance on me. I hadn’t done theater in a few years and I don’t always orchestrate or sing very much, although I do have experience singing. Still, they took a big chance on me! (Chuckles). I think it all came together for a reason and I look forward to seeing the Broadway production afterward. As I’m sure readers are going to look forward to seeing you on stage at The Celebration The- atre – I know I certainly do! Thank you!

SPRING AWAKENING Based on a German play written by Frank Wedekind in 1892, which was banned because of its frank portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. The storyline boldly depicts how a handful of adolescents in 19th- Century Germany come of age by making their way through the thrilling, complicated, confusing and mysterious time of their sexual awakening. Unfortunately, parents and educators want to rain on the parade of the tortured teens and do so with tragic outcomes in some cases.
