Going beyond lower weight and reduced costs

Innovation in the airline industry today is synonymous with lightweight products. Whether it’s new seats, new inflight entertainment systems or new aircraft, reducing weight is most important. One leading inflight services supplier, however, is looking beyond this.

While adhering to the trend for lightweight products, LSG Sky Chefs is also looking to provide its customers with additional benefits from virtually every new innovation it brings to the market. “Reducing weight on-board is obviously a high priority for us, just as it is for every other supplier in the industry,” explains Michael Wahl, Vice President of Product Marketing at LSG Sky Chefs. This however, is not the only thing we focus on. It’s our responsibility to ensure that both our customers and passengers are happy. This means that whenever we identify a potential weight saving, we assess it against the impact on the passenger experience and the supply chain. Only then can we determine if it is a saving worth pursuing.” To support this process, LSG Sky Chefs has a created a team who are responsible for analysing the entire passenger travel chain with touch points that include pre-ordered meals, buy-on-board retail products, branded lounge management and catering. Thanks to this, LSG Sky Chefs has gained a unique supplier- passenger perspective, which enables it to

identify how to help airlines to improve their overall brand experience, and make it as seamless as possible. It has also played an important role in the

development of new initiatives and innovations. This is clearly reflected in LSG Sky Chef’s lightweight products, which are on display at World Travel Catering & Onboard Services Expo 2012. What began with the Quantum trolley, which not only offers 35 percent weight savings over standard aluminium models but also easier servicing, has now been extended to a completely new range of products. The successful outcome of these is, in part, down to utilising the innovative processes and lessons learnt in the development of the award- winning trolley as the

foundation for the design, development and sourcing of

the new lightweight range.

According to Thomas Koehler, Director Engineering & IP Management at LSG Sky Chefs: ”With our new “enlight” product line, we are eager to demonstrate how we can provide airlines with a range of lightweight onboard equipment that is proven to enhance efficiency while reducing consumption.” It’s not just product innovations that are being viewed from different perspectives at LSG Sky Chefs. The company is also applying this approach to other parts of its business offering as well. Within buy-on-board, for example, the company is finding new ways to reduce costs and the environmental impact, while enhancing the passenger experience. “A lot of
