Forms of Fiction 1 day | Caitlin Horrocks Poets have sonnets, villanelles, haibuns, ghazals, pantoums: hundreds of forms to provide scaffolding and structure to their lyrical ideas. In fiction, we often talk about form only in terms of length: novels and short stories and short-shorts or the elusive novella. We can do better! Think Ander Monson’s “Big 32,” in the form of a temperature gauge, or Kevin Wilson’s “The Dead Sister Handbook,” or more traditional stories that impose some kind of constraint on their authors or readers. This workshop will re-examine the idea of form in fiction: how it can shape a difficult subject, refresh a familiar one, and provide new paths for our creativity. Workshop will include sample readings and practical exercises. Held at the EWU Riverpoint Campus, Phase 1 Building. Pre-registration suggested; general admission $30/$20 w/student ID. Sa 4/14

20 Ways to Tell a Story 1 day | Wendy Call In this fast-paced afternoon, we zoom through twenty writing exercises, searching for the best way to get those words on the page. If there’s a story (factual or otherwise) you’ve been itching to tell, or a narrative poem prowling your mind, this is your chance to anchor those words to the page. Multimedia writing prompts – questions, answers, lines of poetry, images, even scents – will help us open the dusty drawers of memory and empty them out. Each participant leaves with the raw material for a rough draft. All writers or wannabe writers age 13 and over are welcome! Held at the EWU Riverpoint Campus, Phase 1 Building. Pre-registration

suggested;

admission $30/$20 w/student ID. Sa 4/14
