Secondary heads to leave

Footpaths progress REPAIRS to broken and un- even footpaths in Bower Mount Road have been carried out by Kent Highway Services. The three-week project, now nearing completion, has seen the paths resurfaced and kerbs replaced as part of a larger county-wide programme of footway refurbishments. The resurfacing work is de- signed to increase pedestrian safety as well as improving the appearance of the neighbour- hood, while strengthening the footpaths to prevent further de- terioration.

Blind bowling game ROCHESTER Blind Bowling Group will face teams from Maidstone’s Mote Park Indoor Bowls Club. It will take place on Sunday February 5, starting at 11.30am and followed by lunch. The players bowl with some assistance from the marker, who indicates verbally where the wood has been bowled, in feet and inches, directionally based on the face of a clock.

24 solar panels A PROPOSAL to install 24 solar panels on the flat roof of a building at 75 Campbell Road, Maidstone, has been given planning consent.

TWOofMaidstone’s leading headmasters have an- nounced they are to quit teaching in the summer. Dr Nick Argent (57), head of Maidstone Gram-

mar School for boys in Barton Road, is leaving his £82,000 per year post for personal reasons, as is Mr Richard Johnson (46), head of Sutton Valence Preparatory School, Chart Sutton. Dr Argent, who came to Maidstone from the in- dependent boys’ school, Elizabeth College, in Guernsey, has said his decision has nothing to do with the school but for “changes in his personal circumstances”. He is considering the possibility of retirement or consultancy work. In a letter to parents, chairman of governorsMrs Lindsey Evans writes: “I would like to thank Dr Argent for his efforts over the past three years.” In Chart Sutton, Prep School headmaster Richard Johnson has also given notice that he will leave in the summer.

Almshouses may be extended

THE Cutbush & Corrall Charity has applied to extend and refurbish six almshouses in St Faiths Street, Maid- stone. The proposal is to extend the ground floors of each ex-

isting dwelling to enable kitchens to be housed there. The supporting statement added: “At first floor, new joinery and bathrooms will be installed. Generally it is proposed to improve the thermal performance of the dwellings by lining internally and addressing the other issues raised by the charity. “The existing almshouses, although in apparently

good conditionwhen viewed externally, have fallen sig- nificantly below the level of that which is required for modern habitation. “The properties suffer from rising damp, drafty win-

dows and doors with insufficient heating and hot water systems and limited kitchen and living accommoda- tion.” MaidstoneCouncil will decide on the application.

Mr Johnson (pic- tured),who attended the Royal family’s favourite Gordon- stoun School near Elgin, joined Sutton Valence Prep School fromWiltshire, three years ago, where he still has family. Before moving to

Kent, he was deputy headmaster of Pewsey School and is an experienced member of the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Aspokesman for the prep school said: “The gov- ernors have recorded their gratitude to Mr John- son for bringing a wealth of experience to the school and for all that he has done in his time here and send him, his wife Helen and their young son their best wishes for the future.”

Kevin Bance (59), of Brookfield, Kemsing, Sevenoaks, caused punctures to a total of 16 police cars in April last year. Police said he wasmotivated by revenge after being fined for disorderly behaviour in 2010.

Ex-cop sets sights on top job A FORMER police constable accused of faking an assault while on duty and then wasting po- lice time, plans to stand as Kent’s first police commissioner in the May election. Frances Croucher (29), from Maidstone, has
