Tesco bids for East rail station site


Tool thefts arrests THREE people were arrested by Kent police following a spate of tool thefts from vans parked atMaidstone hotels. Workmen lost not only their


tools, but also business as a re- sult of the thefts. Hotels in the town have


been issued with crime pre- vention leaflets and workmen urged to take valuable tools indoors overnight. CCTV footage helped police identify three suspects who have since appeared before Maidstone magistrates. Those arrested, a 20-year-


old and two 22-year-olds, were all from the London area.


Fuel costs blamed

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is believed to be lead- ing the field in the bid to be anchor tenant at the long-awaited Maidstone East station redevelopment. Asda, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s have all had


their names in the frame to open a superstore on the extensive site, fringed by Brenchley Gardens and Sandling Road, when the Post Office sorting office relocates within the next year. The site has been under the spotlight for more


than a decade and is seen as one of the remaining “hotspots” in the regeneration of the town centre. However, after two aborted plans in recent years, confidence is once more rising that the site – along with six others in the South East – could soon be
