technologies are now mature enough that any device that complies with the standard can probably function on any live 2G or 3G network, this is not yet the case for LTE. With this in mind, manufacturers, system integrators and other stakeholders must look for LTE suppliers that have a clear sense of how network operators are implementing LTE in a given market, and how that deployment may differ from others, or risk major mistakes. As a key player at the centre of the
LTE ecosystem, Sierra Wireless has recognised that our customers need in turn to be able to provide their customers with options when it comes to network services. As such, we have
focused our efforts towards streamlined wireless integration, so manufacturers have quick access to new technologies in pre-certifi ed modules with a common interface. This allows them to design and develop a product once and apply the work across devices for multiple networks, keeping development costs under control.
Next steps for LTE Rollouts and trials of LTE networks are already prevalent in a number of global regions. In the UK, BT has joined with the mobile operator Everything Everywhere to test LTE in ‘notspot’- ridden areas such as Cornwall as early as this month. While early analyst
reports suggested that LTE might only be implemented as hotspots in select locations, it now appears that LTE coverage will be extensive in many regions, following in the footsteps of every other major cellular network launch. Commitments have been made by operators to invest in new networks and the pace in deployment of LTE has quickened. With the path to LTE now certain, if not altogether clear for all stakeholders involved, manufacturers, system integrators, and application developers need to move past the debate and towards delivering connected products and applications over the next few years.
