the image. The quality of the images captured by Full HD cameras is even more remarkable, indeed they truly need to be seen to be believed. Capable of displaying 1080p resolution and with some models incorporating Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) operation for use in challenging lighting conditions, Full HD cameras and domes utilising Samsung’s WiseNet2 DSP chipset can do the job of fi ve standard CCTV cameras and can produce evidence grade images which could prove to be invaluable when a company is looking to detect criminal activity. The superb quality images can be equally useful for organisations who are looking to ensure staff and visitors comply with Health & Safety policies and they can also be a powerful management tool in, for example, a retail environment where merchandisers can use the high defi nition images to observe the buying patterns of their customers. Banks, casinos, retailers,

manufacturers, town centres, airports, ports and train stations are just a few of the environments where the remarkable quality of the images captured by Full

HD network cameras can ensure that a video surveillance system exceeds the user’s expectations. Whilst this article has primarily been

about highlighting the advantages to all parties of Video over IP, it is also important to point out that clients are increasingly looking to take advantage of the benefi ts of an online network based access control system. A major objective is therefore to seek ways in which an access control system can integrate and interact with other security systems, including of course, video surveillance, where the ability to be able to pass video, data or alarm information between these systems has obvious operational benefi ts. As well as providing visual verifi cation of anyone attempting to gain access to restricted areas, there is also an opportunity to obtain valuable management information such as time and attendance records. For end-users to have confi dence in

the information provided by a video surveillance system and an access control system working in harmony, it is important that access control events and alarms can be reliably and consistently

synchronised with the relevant video. Until now there has been no low cost method of doing this and for many years users have suffered the frustration of fi nding that the video they have retrieved from a recording device relates to an event that occurred several seconds or even minutes before or after the actual event they wished to view.

2012 and beyond Whilst physical security is not an area which most IT and network professionals have been involved in, it clearly offers the potential for new sources of revenue whilst proving the opportunity to consolidate and build on existing relationships with existing clients by offering additional services. There is support and advice available to integrators from manufacturers such as Samsung and full training and tools available to help specify and install physical security equipment. Why not become part of the video over IP revolution?
