approach. One effective method of device enrolment is to automate the process, allowing employees to self-register devices securely, without requiring additional IT resources. Initially, an employee connects to
the WLAN as a guest. The employee is then redirected to a captive portal for ‘employee-owned device enrolment.’ This captive portal requires the user’s normal login credentials to establish their identity, which is verifi ed against existing authentication infrastructure. At this point the network prepares a unique self-install confi guration profi le for that user’s device, sending it to the device either over the IP connection or via email or SMS.
This enrolment process accomplishes
a number of important goals. First, it is easy for the user. A single click installation avoids manual entry of Wi-Fi network parameters, and reduces the risk of errors, user frustration and helpdesk calls. Second, it can incorporate mutual authentication. It is especially important that the network confi rms the user’s identity. This is accomplished by entering existing credentials and the user confi rms the network is indeed the corporate network rather than a honeypot imposter. Most importantly, it prevents the
need for IT to spend endless cycles to provision employee-owned devices for certifi cate based authentication.
Device Visibility The WLAN will sometimes be used in a multilayered approach with other mobile device management services. Apple provides a number of tools to assist in managing employee-owned iPhones. For example, remote-wipe capabilities can trigger the iPhone to erase all user data once it has been reported lost or stolen. IT can investigate other MDM solutions to augment the level of control as determined by business requirements.
