Who’s Who in Equine Studies Dr. Amy Burk


Dr. Amy Burk (M.S., Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition, Virginia Tech) is a Maryland native and serves as the coordinator for undergraduate Equine Studies in the Animal and Avian Sciences Department at UMD, giving lectures and labs in Horse Management and Equine Science. As an Extension Horse Specialist, Dr. Burk provides statewide leadership and training and is project coordinator for the Equine Rotational Grazing Demonstration Site in Ellicott City. Dr. Burk’s awards include the Outstanding Educator Award


from the Equine Science Society and the Poff enberger Excellence in Teaching and Advising Award from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at UMD.


Jennifer Reynolds


Jennifer Reynolds (B.S. in Large Animal Science, Delaware Valley College), originally from New Jersey, is the Equine–Poultry Extension Coordinator for the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences, which includes partipating in the University Seminar Series at Horse World Expo, the Equine Session at the Mid-Atlantic Nutrition Conference, and events at the Equine Rotational Grazing Demonstration Site. After gaining


experience as a broodmare and boarding barn manager and volunteer with therapeutic riding programs, she spent 10 years with University of Maryland Extension in Carroll County, with the 4-H program and Nutrient Management Program.


Kristen Wilson


Kristen Wilson (B.S. in Animal Science–Equine Industry, M.S. in Extension Education, U. of Florida), another Maryland native, is an Extension Horse Specialist. Her research identifi ed needs of adult horse owners for Florida Horse Extension. Kristen provides statewide leadership for the


Maryland 4-H Horse Program, coordinating equine contests and educational programs, and teaches equine courses within the Institute of Applied Agriculture’s Agricultural Business Management Program.


Crystal Caldwell


Crystal Caldwell (B.S. in Animal and Veterinary Sciences, U. of Maine; M.S. in Animal Science, U. of Idaho), who hails from Maine, is the Campus Farm Manager for the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences, overseeing the farm’s day-to-day management and presenting animal science lectures and labs. Her nine years of experience, largely at university farms, include her position as Livestock Manager at the U. of Maine campus farm.


NEW TO UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND EXTENSION Sara Meagher


Sara Meagher (B.S. in Animal Science and Agriculture Science and Technology, M.Ed. in Science Education, UMD) is our new Faculty Extension Assistant with UMD Extension in Harford County, coordinating and teaching a variety of agriculture-related programs, including horse management and care. Sara had


served as an Extension Assistant to the equine studies and nutrient management programs at UMD before returning to the community where she grew up.


Jessica Renshaw


Jessica Renshaw (B.A. in Agriculture–Animal Science, UMD-Eastern Shore) is our Faculty Extension Assistant with UMD Extension for the Lower Eastern Shore Counties, where she grew up competing in a variety of equestrian disciplines. She develops and coordinates programs and events that include equine health and pasture management, with an emphasis on youth involvement.
