as a fl at, hurdle and timber horse. Most notably, he was a two-time winner of the Maryland Hunt Cup (1995 and 1997) for owners Arcadia Stable. Jake won his fi rst fl at track race in 1990 and was sold as a steeplechase prospect in 1992. He started his steeplechase career as a hurdle horse but trainer Charlie Fenwick, Jr. felt the horse would be better suited for timber. He won his fi rst two timber races in 1993. In ad- dition to the Maryland Hunt Cup, Jake won the International Gold Cup, the Pennsulvania Hunt Cup (twice), and the Maryland Grand National (three times). After retiring from racing in 2000, Jake tran- sitioned into life as a foxhunter for the Fenwick family, although he did act as an early mount for junior rider Connor Hankin when he fi rst got into steeplechase riding.

Howard County Proposes Stable Set-Back Adjustments

Currently, Howard County zoning allows lesson and boarding stables on rural land a zoning exception based on certain set-back re- quirements (according to the Howard County Times): stables and arenas can be as close as 100 feet from the property line if there are 20 or fewer horses, but 200 feet if there are more than 20 horses. T e proposal would change how the setbacks are determined, basing the standard on the structures rather than the number of horses: 200 feet for a stable, 100 feet for riding arena. Given the fl uidity of head counts on any given day, this certainly sounds sensible.
