MANAGING A MICRO-BUSINESS - EASIER SAID THAN DONE? (part 3) Last month I identified two factors that could explain why management can cause problems for the owners

of many micro-businesses (MBs). My third factor concerns the very human tendency to see some tasks as so obvious, or simple, that it’s perceived that anyone can not just do them, but do them quickly and easily. Now, for some - to me - mysterious reason, there seems to be an assumption that basic business manage- ment - decision-making, planning and other actions involved in “making things happen” - is collectively such a task. Witness, for example, my own experience when I attended a formal introductory course for budding business owners and found that it covered virtually everything except basic management.

However, experience indicates that a fair proportion of owners would disagree with this presumption and, in reality, often find basic business management an unwelcome challenge.

Finally, there’s the small matter of what drives effective business management and, primarily, that’s quality information of the right kind. Now, most businesses, including many MBs, invest heavily in information but it’s mostly about business performance and though essential to gauge how well a business is doing, it’s of limited use when you have to make changes or take other action to make the business more effective. That requires what I call operational information, which is frequently seriously neglected by the majority of busi- nesses and, as a result, often not available when needed.

Fortunately, managing an MB doesn’t have to be an or- deal and the difficulties noted in this article can usually be resolved, sometimes without outside help. However, if help is needed, I should be able to assist. In the mean- time, if you are an MB owner who finds management difficult, I hope you found this article worthwhile, perhaps even helpfully thought-provoking.
