Grey Coat Issue 19: January 2012 Prize Giving 17th November 2011
When Vanessa Herrick was in the Sixth Form in the mid-seventies, her focus was on music and this passion continued when Vanessa went to York University to read for a degree in music. She subsequently became a freelance musician and teacher, then made the transition to her present role as Director of Ministry and Vocation for the Diocese of Ely. Since 2003 this work has involved ascertaining the depth of individuals’ aspirations to be ordained.
Ms Maddrell, Lady Laws and Reverend Vanessa Herrick at the annual Prize Giving Ceremony 2011
Vanessa’s experience and understanding, accumulated through marriage, motherhood and careers, contributed to a Prize Giving Address which many described as impressive and inspirational. Whilst acknowledging that “Careers change. Circumstances change” Vanessa pointed out that “the
one thing that remains constant is the person that is you – the person God created – uniquely you. Be true to that person, and live the life you have been given to the full – for your own fulfi lment, yes, but more than anything to make a difference to the world around you”.
Students and parents were eager to convey to Vanessa their appreciation of the impact her words had made on them. The Prize Giving Speech may be read in full on the GCH website
In 2012 Vanessa will be moving from Ely Cathedral to Dorset where she has been appointed as Rector of Wimborne Minster. Lady Laws envisaged that Vanessa’s new life-style would embrace long-lived parishioners, Morris dancing and Civil War re- enactments. The Grey Coat Hospital Community wishes Vanessa good fortune in her new role. Ms McMellan
