Hard-working Squirt B1 team making strides

ason Flick wasn’t sure what he had in his LA Hockey Club Squirt B team at the beginning season.
“Their development was my first concern,” Flick said of a squad predomi- nantly comprised of 2001 birth years. “The majority of the kids had a losing season the year prior, and I didn’t know where they were, skill-wise.” The team - under the direction of Flick, assistants Joe Consolazio, Bri- an Mark and manager David Calero - answered that question immediately, winning its division of the season-open- ing Early Bird tournament in Anaheim. “They’re like blue-collar workers,” Flick said. “They’re always trying to learn the game and improve. It almost seems like they’re trying to make up for last year. It’s a good group of kids and a good group of parents.” The team is comprised of Chase Calero, Davis Clayton, Christopher Consolazio, Jatan Desai, Chris Emery, Hunter Flick, Luc Ghantous, Nicholas Gonzalez, Jacob Hageman,

Dylan Mark, Adam Plager, Jack Silver and Nicholas Vasquez, as well as goaltender Jackson Burgess. The group nearly won a Silver Stick regional in San Jose over Thanksgiving Weekend, losing 1-0 to the California Cougars in its division final.
“Our biggest problem all tournament was putting the puck in the net,” said Flick, whose background in California hockey reaches back 16 years when he first met Jeff Turcotte at the former Westminster Ice Palace, “and you can tell they’re working hard on that.” A teacher by day, it should be no surprise Flick is adept at mentoring the 9- and 10-year-olds. He’s also been an instructor for the Turcotte Hockey School for 13 years.
The Squirt team’s progress has impressed LA Hockey Club president James Gasseau.
“Our Squirt B1 coaching staff has been doing a great job of developing their players and building a nice team chemistry,” he said. “We’re very proud of the work they’re putting in to help the kids improve.”
