he Winter Classic tournament pro- vided goals galore and upsets aplenty during the five-day Sharks Ice-San Jose- hosted extravaganza.


The ninth annual event, which was held from Dec. 26-30, drew 40 top-flight teams representing both Northern and Southern California, as well as others from outside the state.


“We saw some very competitive games,” Winter Classic tournament chair- man James Kawamoto said. “Overall, it was a very good tournament.” Division winners included the Tri- Valley Blue Devils (Mite), Santa Rosa Flyers (Squirt B), San Jose Sharp Shoot- ers (Squirt A), California Cougars (Pee Wee B), San Jose Jr. Sharks (Pee Wee A), Santa Clara Blackhawks (Bantam B), San Diego Jr. Gulls 1 (Bantam A) and Jr. Sharks (Midget 18U).

The Pee Wee B division only featured two teams: the Cougars and the San Jose Sharks Ice squad. The pair played several exhibitions before the title game. The Cougars prevailed in the cham- pionship, winning 7-1. Paul Lopez and Brandon Collins scored twice with Max George, Christian Bergstrom and Ethan Geller notching the other Cougar goals.


In the Pee Wee A bracket, the host Jr. Sharks defeated Vacaville, 4-1, in the title game. Austin Billings scored the game- winner, with Nolan Chao, Macon Jones and Alan Goff also adding goals. Josh Neil scored for Vacaville.

Tri-Valley prevailed in the Mite championship, upsetting Santa Clara, 3-1. Stas Pupkov had a goal and an assist, while Cade Llewellyn and Carson Mc- Dowell also scored for the Blue Devils, who went 2-1-1 in divisional play.


Pupkov led the Blue Devils with 11 goals and six assists for 17 points.


Tri-Valley doubled-up the Redwood City Black Stars, 6-3, in the semifinal to earn a chance to meet Santa Clara, which cruised through pool play at 4-0 while outscoring opponents, 38-5. The Blackhawks trounced San Jose, 13-3, in their semifinal. Santa Clara’s William Serverian led the team with 11 goals for 20 points in six games. Netminder Bradley Janssen started all six games in goal, post- ing a 1.83 goals-against average. In the Squirt B division, Lucas Happy scored a


goal - the game-winner - and added an assist in Santa Rosa’s 2-1 victory over the Vacaville Jets in the final. Logan Zimmerman opened the scoring for the Flyers, who posted 3-0-1 record in the Silver Division. Santa Rosa upset the Teal Division winners, the Cougars 1 team, in the semifinals, 2-1. Happy scored both Flyers goals, while Caleb Ross accounted for California’s lone marker. The Cougars went 4-0 in divi- sional play.


The Sharp Shooters’ Mason Siemsen scored twice to lead his team to 6-1 victory over the host Jr. Sharks in the Squirt A championship. Owen Bohn notched a goal and three assists, while Brendan Ma, Braden Wu and Max Scott also scored for the Sharp Shooters, who blanked the Santa Clara 2 team, 4-0, in the semifi- nal.


Hunter McKown and Ma tied for the scoring lead as each nabbed five goals for 10 points in five games.


Chao (seven goals for eight points) tied with the Jets’ Daniel Nikiforov (six goals for eight points) and David Grind- staff (five goals, eight points) for the Pee Wee A scoring lead.


Santa Clara shut out the Portland


(Ore.) Jr. Hawks, 2-0, in the Bantam B championship tilt. Matthew Thompson and Keaton Mahaffey scored for the Blackhawks, while goaltender Aiden Farr stopped 18 shots for the shutout. Santa Clara’s Nolan Roth (five goals, 14 points) led all Bantam B scorers.


In Bantam A, the Jr. Gulls 1 team knocked off Vacaville, 3-1, in the title game. Olli Naarala, Sabin Karma and Tatu Kunto scored for the Jr. Gulls, who beat the Cougars, 5-2, in semifinal play. The Gulls went 2-0-1 in division play, which in- cluded a 1-1 tie with the Cougars. Anthony Zapanta scored twice to lead the Jr. Sharks past Tri-Valley, 5-1, in the Midget 18U A finale. Adam Canepa, Christopher Smith and Takuto Wada also scored for San Jose, which downed the Littleton (Colo.) Hawks, 5-1, in the semifinal. Brydon Grandfield scored for Tri-Valley.
