Three with Jr. Kings ties earn holiday call-ups T

wo current members of the Los Angeles Jr. Kings’ 16 AAA team and one former member gained some additional playing experience over the holiday break. First up was forward Riley Al-

ferd, a draft pick of the Muskegon (Mich.) Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL). While the Jr. Kings were playing in a Tier I Elite League showcase in Detroit in mid-December, Muskegon asked him to play in a Dec. 18 game against the U.S. National Team Development Program’s (NTDP) Under-18 Team.

“It was a really cool experience; a lot faster and a lot bigger kids,” said Alferd, who hopes to play in Muskegon full-time next season. “It’ll push me to get better.” Next up was team captain Ryan

Siroky (Manhattan Beach), a for- ward who got a three-game call-up to the Green Bay Gamblers, also of the USHL, the last week of Decem- ber.

Goaltender Thatcher Demko, who left to play for the Omaha Lancers of the USHL in November, got a call from USA Hockey as an emergency fill-in for the NTDP’s Un- der-17 Team at the World Under-17 Challenge in Windsor, Ontario. Demko (San Diego) posted two wins, including a 2-1 shootout triumph over Sweden in the semifi- nals.

Teammate Scott Savage (San Clemente), a defenseman, had three assists for Team USA during the tournament, including one in a 4-2 victor over Canada Pacific and former LA Selects teammate Eric Comrie (Newport Beach), a goal- tender who stopped 34 of 37 shots in that contest.

The U.S. lost to Russia in the championship game, 7-4.

T

he World Junior Champion- ship didn’t go as Team USA had hoped, but two forwards with California ties played well. Team captain Jason Zucker, a former LA Select who is now a sophomore at the University of Denver, had seven points in six games, while assistant captain Emerson Etem, a Long Beach native who plays for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League, chipped in four as- sists in six games.

he Anaheim Ice Firstars Squirt AAA team went 7-0, outscoring its foes, 36-7, en route to winning the prestigious Shanahan War- rior tournament in Toronto in late November.

The Firstars beat Detroit Little Caesars, 4-1, in the final after knocking off an Ontario power- house, the Markham Waxers, 6-4. Jackson Niedermayer had 14 points, including 12 goals; Cam- eron York added 11 points; and goaltender Jack Wolfe went 5-0 with a 1.31 goals-against average.

T

wo former LA Selects playing in the USHL recently made NCAA Division I college commit- ments: Forward Austin Ortega (Escondido) of the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) RoughRiders plans to play at Nebraska-Omaha, while Jake Fallon of the Indiana Ice will head to Vermont.

T

he most heavily scouted tour- nament in the state last month was the LA Selects 97s’ Holiday Cup in Lakewood. No fewer than 23 scouts were on hand to watch some of the top Bantam AAA prospects from the Western U.S. and Canada. The Selects reached the finals before losing to Burnaby Winter Club, 4-1. BWC also edged LA, 4-3, in a round-robin shootout.

kowski and defenseman Kaliya Johnson - won silver medals with Team USA earlier this month at the Women’s World Under-18 Championship in the Czech Repub- lic. The U.S. fell in the title game to Canada, 3-0.
