One entry per Maidstone Borough resident – not open to Maidstone councillors or council employees.

Maidstone Borough Council publishes Borough Update in Downs Mail to keep Maidstone residents up-to-date with information about council services and general public information.

Licensing

Issuing of statutory and local licenses such as licensed premises and street trading.

We also asked residents about the levels of customer service provided by the council.

In 2010 the borough council asked residents which discretionary services mattered most to them. What you said helped the council to find the savings it needed to balance its budget in the year 2011-12.

Towards the end of 2011 the council asked residents which statutory services mattered most to them, to help it decide on savings for the year 2012-13. Residents were asked to pick up to four of seven services. The results in order of importance were:

Food Hygiene

Monitoring and enforcement of food safety – Food inspections and complaints.

Community Safety

Safer Maidstone Partnership and other community safety initiatives – to combat anti- social behaviour, domestic abuse, substance misuse.

Pollution Control

Monitoring and enforcement of pollution – Air quality and contaminated land.

Building Control

Inspections and compliance with building regulations. Noise Control

Monitoring and enforcement of noise pollution – Noisy neighbours and noise complaints.

Social Inclusion

Positive action to support disadvantaged groups – including neighbourhood planning, youth activities, community halls.

67% of respondents said - Don’t open the Maidstone Gateway on Saturday mornings.

81% said - Don’t open the Maidstone Gateway on Thursday evenings.

50% said yes and 50% said no to an automated telephone switchboard.

60% of respondents said we should not take longer to answer letters.

55% said we could take longer to answer emails

The results and other comments will help the council set its budgets for 2012-13 – savings of £1.8million are needed. £1.1 million has already been found as a result of the 2010 consultation but a further £700,000 still has to be found.

The Council will set its budget on 29 February 2012.

Street sign clutter clean up

Maidstone is set for another clear out of street clutter. Last year Maidstone Borough Council and Kent County Council removed more than 1,100 barriers, posts and other items of street clutter from Maidstone’s streets.

This year the target will be on unnecessary street signs. Unnecessary, duplicated, outdated and untidy street signs will be targeted in a survey in February followed by a spring clean to remove all of the signs which unnecessary.
