Distribution centre could be on cards for Sandling
GALLAGHER Properties has applied to set up a storage and distribution centre at Brooklyn Yard, Chatham Road, Sandling. Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers
has a long-established planning consent to set up its headquarters on the site but, according to the planning statement, the company “has deter- mined that they no longer have a need for the site and do not intend to proceed with the develop- ment and accordingly put the land on the market. “This has subsequently been purchased by Gal-

Father Geoff is new priest
FATHER Geof- frey Pointer has been appointed the new priest for the Catholic churches of St Peter
in
Bearsted and The Good Shepherd in Harrietsham. Maidstone-born Father Geoff was brought up in Shepway and at- tended Senacre School before joining KCC’s highways department. He succeeds Monsignor Tim Galligan, who left for a new appoint- ment in London after serving as a parish priest for six years. In a ceremony attended by parishioners from his new church as
Canon John Clark, Bishop John Hine, Fr Geof- frey Pointer and Deacon Cyril Durbin, who offi- ciated at Fr Geoffrey’s induction
well as friends from his previous appointments, Father Geoff was inducted by Bishop John Hine and received the keys to the church. Leaders of other local churches also joined in to congratulate Father Geoff on his new appointment.
lagher Properties Ltd and this application ismade on their behalf.” The proposal is for an L-shaped building capa-
ble of subdivision to provide four separate units and total floorspace of 3,532sq m. The statement added: “Given the absence of any neighbouring uses and the site context, it is proposed that the use be unrestricted in terms of hours of operation. This will maintain flexibility and ensure that the scheme optimises its economic potential.” Maid- stone Council will decide on the plan.
Trees could be axed
in footpaths scheme RESIDENTS in Bearsted are to be consulted on a range of foot- path improvements – which could mean the removal of trees. The parish council environ-
ment committee has been look- ing at a package of potential improvements to the footpath between Roseacre Lane and St Faith’s Lane, dubbed the “St Faith’s Improvement Project”. While some coppicing and re- moval of trees is considered necessary, the working party would also like to see a com- prehensive replanting scheme to improve the area. An article due to appear in
the next parish newsletter will invite local residents’ views on the proposals and parish coun- cil vice-chairman Paul Young has assured that no work will take place until this happens. Parish council chairman Chris
Dyke has surveyed the area, to- gether with a local tree surgeon, Maidstone Council’s landscape team and a local resident who works in arboriculture. Cllr Young said: “The sugges-
tions from the working party in- clude a staged project to improve the area, using a com- bination of general mainte- nance, possible coppicing and removal of some trees, coupled with a replanting scheme to im- prove the area, not just to do everything in one hit.”
