In 2005, Midland Aerospace installed its first 5-axis machining centre from DMG, a DMU 70 eVo.
The Sutton-in-Ashfield subcontractor now operates six machines from the same supplier for fully interpolative, 5-axis prismatic metalcutting, as well as a CNC lathe. The two latest DMG
machining centres, installed in July 2011, highlight that not all of the subcontractor’s business is in the aerospace sector. The DMU 50s were bought to maintain quick turnaround of an increasing amount of work being received from customers in Formula One and the energy business, both traditional and renewable. Contracts
from the latter industry were instrumental in Midland Aerospace installing its largest capacity machining centre to date, a DMU 100 P with 1m3 capacity.
The new Datron C5 is an innovative horizontal 5-axis HSC machine tool that will easily fit through a standard doorway, the company claims.
Built with the pedigree of Datron design and innovation, the high speed machine packs its power into a 1m square footprint. The machine
is reported to be ideal for the precision milling of small workpieces held in a single fixture or clamp.
Complex geometries can thus be machined – such as for medical technology, scientific instrumentation, aerospace, telecommunications and toolmaking. Workpiece sizes of up to 60mm diameter and
The subcontractor is a
first-, second-, third- and in one case fourth-tier supplier to aerospace customers. Despite taking on more work from outside the sector,
60mm height, 100mm diameter and 30mm height, 96mm x 75mm x 20mm or a 50mm cube can be accommodated. Excellent surface finishes are achieved through the integral low vibration characteristics of the Datron C5. The rotary swivel axis is driven by dynamic torque motors which provide repeatability and reliability. High cutting performance is delivered via the 1.8kW high speed precision spindle with up to 48,000rpm – essential for the smallest tools. Featuring HSK 25E spindle technology, high quality ballscrews and guides with built-in linear scales provide high precision and tolerance levels of ±2μm. The automatic tool changer has 22 positions and an integrated tool length sensor.
Designed with easy access for quick setting-up and routine maintenance, its fast digital servo control is supported by familiar Windows software. Value for money, short set-up
