A Sittingbourne, Kent-based subcontractor is the first in the UK to install a twin spindle, triple turret mill/turn

centre from CMZ.

The TX66 Y3 advanced mill/ turn centre was chosen by Tony De Roberto, managing director

of AD Engineering as many of the components manufactured by the company must be produced in a single set-up operation employing a number of driven tools.

Pankl Racing Systems UK Ltd

3 & 5 – AXIS CNC MILLING & CNC TURNING (Contract & Permanent Vacancies)

Pankl Racing Systems with companies based in Austria, UK, USA, Slovakia and Japan, specialises in developing and manufacturing engine and drivetrain components for the motor racing industry, as well as high performance vehicles.

This is an excellent opportunity to join the UK division of a world class motorsport company manufacturing lightweight components designed to operate under extreme conditions.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Producing highest quality machined components on time to schedule using a variety of CNC machines and manual machines.

• The ability to operate and program a variety of CNC machinery is essential. • Generating practical ideas for improving component manufacture and quality. • Ability to work under minimal supervision and working to tight deadlines.

Desirable Attributes:

• The successful candidate will have a recognised apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in machining.

• Knowledge of Heidenhain and Fanuc controls would also be beneficial. If you think you are up to this challenge, please contact us quoting reference: PK1

Component tolerances are often less than 5μm. The company supplies components used in sensors, wind turbines, subsea connectors, pumps, fibre optics and aircraft control units. Mr De Roberto is naturally impressed with his latest purchase: “Seeing three turrets operating at the same time is incredible,” he enthused. “The speed of metal removal will allow the company to undertake work that previously offered only marginal returns.”

As well as installing a new mill/turn centre, AD Engineering has also purchased a Mitutoyo optical measuring machine. This will be installed in an air conditioned quality inspection room alongside a CMM that is used to produce detailed inspection reports. Spanish machine tool manufacturer CMZ introduces a new range of machines to the market every three years. The multi-turret, multi-spindle TX range was launched in May 2010 and is available with 52mm and 66mm spindle

bores. Turret configuration can be two upper turrets, an upper and a lower turret or in a triple turret version as is the case with AD Engineering.

All of the 12 station turrets have an 18kW driven tool facility, Y-axes with ±40mm and half index to allow up to four tools per single turret station. “CMZ is one of only two manufacturers that offer a multi-turret machine with the more rigid box guideway system,” revealed Keith Howell, CMZ UK’s managing director. “Although more expensive than

linear guides, CMZ believes that the additional rigidity will give end users the edge on long- term cutting ability. We grind our own beds and the cost of this operation alone is more than a complete linear guide system for a competitor’s machine.” The TX is the first machine in the CMZ stable to be fitted with a 15 inch screen version of the Fanuc 31iT control.

The recent Advanced Engineering UK 2011 group of events, held at the NEC Birmingham from 9-10 November this year, saw a record attendance, nearly doubling on 2010, with a combined attendance over the two day concentrated event, approaching 7,000 industry professionals. The show encompassed Aero Engineering 2011, The Composites Engineering Show, Energy Engineering 2011, and the UK Plastic Electronics show. Ian Stone, managing director of event organiser UK Tech Events commented: “The continuing rapid growth in attendees and exhibitor groups around this event cluster is yet

further confirmation that these are the sectors around which UK businesses and supply chains are flourishing – in the high end, value added, and IP rich engineering market segments. “Indeed with some 400 exhibiting companies and organisations over the combined show floor, 140 plus supporting integrated expert technology and business presentations and pre-show B2B meeting setting online facilities between participating groups, the event is already established as one of the most important dates in the UK engineering calendar. Some 2,500 individual company and organisation locations participated at this year’s event, including a record number of international attendee groups from Europe, North America and Asia.”

The 2011 event showcased individual show floor areas, providing diverse concentrations of industry-specific capability in aerospace engineering technologies and services,

advanced composite design and manufacturing, energy industry engineering and the breakthrough area of printed and organic electronics. However overall, the combined events collectively provided a rich diversity of unexpected opportunities to tap into relevant technology streams over the show as a whole, reflecting the overlapping nature of all of the sectors.

This was reinforced by the diverse programme of parallel industry business briefings, providing ‘big picture’ intelligence on the advanced engineering landscape in the UK at the same time as drilling deep into each of the individual industry sectors.

Dates are already set for the 2012 Advanced Engineering UK group of events, again at the NEC Birmingham from 7-8 November 2012.
