North Warwickshire & Hinckley College (NWHC) has recently invested in a number of new machine tools and hi-tech ancillary equipment from Coventry- based GF AgieCharmilles. The machines and equipment were delivered and installed at the college’s new, modern and purpose-built Advanced Engineering Centre (located at its Nuneaton campus) during September 2011 and were acquired as part of a £1.5 million grant provided by Warwickshire County Council to create a state- of-the-art engineering training facility to meet the current and future needs of local young people and manufacturers in the region. The new machines installed at the Advanced Engineering Centre demonstrate the progressive and forward thinking nature of the college, which is rated as outstanding by Ofsted.
Rather than merely upgrade its existing traditional milling, turning and grinding capabilities, the college, following market research into the future needs of the local community and employers, decided instead to invest in a range of advanced machine tools, perhaps more reflective of a manufacturer of high precision components, than a FE College. The GF AgieCharmilles machines acquired by NWHC include a Mikron VCE 600 Pro
machining centre (equipped with a 4th/5th-axis unit); a FORM 20 die sink machine; a CUT 20P wire EDM machine and a Drill 20 (EDM hole driller).
In addition to these, GF AgieCharmilles, as part of its one stop, total systems solutions provision, also managed and coordinated the sourcing, delivery and installation of a new CNC lathe with driven tools and a CMM from third party suppliers as part of the investment package.
NWHC’s Advanced Engineering Centre is impressive. The new facility, as well as having a sizeable workshop area where the new machines are located, also features conference facilities, classrooms and advanced CAD training capabilities. The new machine tool
technologies installed in the centre will be put to good use in a number of ways: to help raise the profile of engineering and vocational training with local schools and school children (aged 14-16) via NWHC’s Schools Programme; to enhance and make more relevant existing full time engineering courses at the college (such as BTEC Diploma Courses); to improve the take-up of NWHC’s engineering apprenticeships by offering young people and their respective employers the opportunity to benefit from high quality off-the-job training and qualifications offered by college; and to provide CNC machining experience and expertise to employed adults looking to improve, upgrade or refresh their existing engineering skills. In addition to providing vocational training, the longer- term vision for the centre is to become an employer in its own right through its own apprenticeship scheme. “As well as the training side of the business we are exploring the concept of developing the facility as a profit centre in its own right to create new income that we can invest back into the college,” explains Paul Dancer, NWHC’s director for transport and engineering.
