“Obviously, I’m not the complete outsider in the same way I once was. At the same time though, I’m still seriously glad that I’m on a small cottage record label (Xtra Mile Recordings) and we’re selling tickets for Wembley Arena. I’m still an artist where everyone who buys an album also buys a ticket. For a lot of mainstream acts, they sell a lot of records to people who don’t really listen to them. Also, I’m still miles away from being a household name in the UK. There’s an awful lot of people going ‘Frank Turner is playing Wembley....who?’ I’m still doing things on my own terms and in my own way and I’m proud of that.” Ah, yes. Wembley. The singer admits that seeing his name on the marquee of the 12,500 capacity London venue (April 13th 2012) will be a tad surreal to see, although his thoughts typically remain focused on giving his audience maximum value for money.

“I wanted it to be a bit more festival-like but apparently opening doors earlier than 6pm at Wembley is quite obscenely expensive,” he admits. “We’ll still have two stages and a total of six acts playing, which is cool but not quite as extensive as I was initially hoping it would be, but there’s gonna be a lot of music for your buck. It’s important to me that kids can afford to come to this show. It’s only £5 more to get in than the Hammersmith show that we did the other day and I don’t want people to think that by moving up to venues of this size that I’m detaching myself from my audience.” Let’s not overlook Frank’s backing band, The Sleeping Souls. The lineup of Nigel Powll (drums), Ben Lloyd (guitar), Matt Nasir (keys), and Tarrant Anderson (bass) – the latter three on a free transfer from Oxford-based band Dive Dive - have collaborated with Frank since 2006 and Keep My Bones sees them solidify their role bringing exquisite dynamics and layers to Frank’s songs, a bit like Frank’s equivalent of Springsteen’s E Street Band or Crazy Horse when they work with Neil Young; a group that fires Frank’s material into its best shape. “One of the things we’ve started to dip our toes into, musically at least, is bits and bobs of co-writing. The thing about that is I’m pretty precious about my songwriting but when you’re sound checking and rehearsing and playing with a bunch of people every day and there’s some good riffs floating around in the middle of it all, after a while it becomes silly not to do something about it. I work with four great musicians and they are an important part of what I do.” Cue The Sleeping Souls teasing Frank about his honesty, in the tour bus. But we believe him. He admits that he is thinking of perhaps doing a record without the band, a solo guitar venture like when he first began with those early web and home-recorded CDR demos, but he makes it clear that the next record will definitely be a Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls album.
