MEATFEAST

MODEL VILLAGE

I’m a fan of insane metal, especially when it sounds as if those that are screeching like they’re particularly unhinged. Meatfeast, from the name to the ridiculous noises emitted by their larynxes are both brilliant and not entirely serious. The music is still brilliant though. Their (wait for it) Skin Tucked In, Meatside Out EP and recent Hands Like Claws EP are master classes in insanity. Another Brummie band worth your attention – what is it about that place? - listen to them with a sense of humour engaged. Especially as this six-piece is fronted by a man known only as Scrote! Cool. http://soundcloud.com/meatfeast/sets/hands-like-claws-ep

Poppy little guitar band Model Village sound almost as quaint as their name. Nothing here to set you alight but certainly a pleasant mix of songs in that indelible jangly, folk-influenced Smithsian sound. They recently supported The Lemonheads, as well as playing with the excellent Singing Adams and Standard Fare. Their self-titled EP from August is a good start for anyone wanting to hear the breadth of their material. With different vocalists pitching in, and the maudlin mixing with the positive, there’s enough here for most casual indie fans. http://modelvillage.bandcamp.com/album/model- village-ep

FANS OF INSANE METAL WILL LOVE MEATFEAST’S RIDICULOUS NOISES…

MUSCLES OF JOY

A seven-piece all female vocal group from Glasgow have perked up a few ears, especially supporting when supporting The Slits on their return to the live scene before the sad death of the rabble-rousing, exhilarating Ari Up. Their spacious, absorbing noise comes from a number of home-made instruments, traditional instruments and, of course, their voices. Having been part of the 50-strong choir The Parsonage, who indulge in unexpected cover versions including Joy Division songs, their voices are naturally the focal point, while also providing a basis for a billowing journey. They have released a self-titled album on tiny Glasgow label Watts of Goodwill. Oh and their live shows are bizarre theatrical and visual experiences to match the odd and thrilling music. www.myspace.com/musclesofjoy
