You never know when you might get the call for a country gig or session, so it’s always good to have a good collection of country style licks up your sleeve. These licks will help you get started and for more examples of

Ex4: A minor is the relative minor to C Major. Adding the notes F & Bb to A minor pentatonic will give you the C Mixolydian mode. Use our good old A minor pentatonic position 1 as a framework, introduce the extra F & Bb notes. When soloing in this scale, it’s the Bb on the 6th fret E strings & 8th fret D string that you should target to bring out that country-flavoured twist.

Ex5: Staying in A minor pentatonic, bend up a tone on the G string, 7th fret with your 3rd finger and hold. Barre your 4th finger across the 8th fret E and B strings and pick up strokes through the 2 notes. Vary the feel by picking through a descending 8th note triplet run targeting the Mixolydian passing notes and then switch to the next pentatonic country style fusion lick in measure four, finishing with a hammer, pull trill and slide on the 3rd fret G string. 3

Ex7: Using the above scale, this country lick in ‘G’ covers 12 frets and really epitomises the country rock twang over G Major. The 3rd bar incorporates a classic pentatonic lick using a slide between the 9th & 7th frets. On the 4th bar, bend the 7th fret ‘A’ string by a semitone targeting the important ‘F‘ note and slide your 1st finger from the 5th to 3rd fret. Pick a quarter bend on the 5th fret ‘E’ string to twist in a touch of blues and finish the lick by once more targeting the F note and completing with an open G root note.

Ex6: This time let’s switch to G Major which contains the same notes as E minor; you’ll come across this key frequently in country music. The scale is a sliding G Major Pentatonic (E minor pentatonic) covering a massive 10 frets! Add in the missing Mixolydian notes ‘B & F’ and you’re armed with a stock of sliding tones which fits perfectly over a country style rhythm in G Major or over a G7 chord. When playing the scale look out for the slides and only use your 1st, 3rd & 4th fingers.
