towards the late afternoon sun on the private veranda of Yellowstone Chalet in a place called Sainte-Foye. My non-skiing partner in crime is nowhere to be seen, probably snowshoeing through the Heidi-esque landscape drinking vin chaud from a fl ask. And then there’s him: a little 8-year-old dynamo in red with more energy than a meerkat, shimmying down the fi nal blue run of the mountain, just beyond my deck, thrilled to be given permission to ski on his own with his cousin. Waving jubilantly in my direction, he veers slightly off -piste to crest a mole hill-sized bump with a whoop of joy.

Back up they go on the little chair lift to do the run again for the upteenth time. As I settle back down with my book, safe in the knowledge that in a resort this small, the lift operators keep an eye out for your children, everyone knows each other and there is only one route down. If only family ski holidays were always like this, I think, taking a sip of my wine and remembering the horror of early morning chalet-to-ski-school transfers, trying to shove procrastinating pre- schoolers into their cold weather gear, retrieving missing gloves and carrying children, snacks and ski poles in time for the ski school kick off . If there is one thing that I have learned it is this. When you are with small children, ensure your chalet or hotel is on the slopes so that you
