The Elms Nursery and Junior
School, Long Eaton, Nottingham were runners-up in the 2011 School Library Association (SLA) Library Design Award, which recognises innovation in library design. The Elms’ library was praised on its ability to encourage reading for the whole school
community. The top prize was won by Rosendale Primary School whose Victorian school lacked space to build a large library, so parent Kate Gorely had the idea of converting a double- decker London bus into one. At a cost of £5,000 a group of 50 volunteers achieved just that in nine months. All the materials used in the bus were recycled or donated by local businesses and the back seat of the bus is used eff ectively as a “story chair” for adults.
