ment it can be hard to remem- ber that the camera tells stories, the photographer tells stories – and with a more powerful story to tell, the photographer can gain confidence in their medium to tell the small and personal as effectively as the significant and global.
the coffee table and you can hope people treat the relatively light binding with care (it’s fine, but read it to your kids, don’t let them drag it about). And let’s face it, like the collectible Leicas that the fandom of Mag- num will leave on their shelves, that’s probably the fate of the limited edition copies which, at £300 or thereabouts, include printed contact sheets by a se- lected photographer. Reading it is far more informative, and out of 500 pages, out of countless images, the message and lesson from the book is simple. Be there and make it about the subject.
Magnum: Contact Sheets Kristen Lubben
ISBN 978 0 500 543993 £95 (at the time of writing, £54 on Amazon)
By the time you read this, if you haven’t come across Magnum: Contact Sheets you’ve clearly been far too busy to be online or reading news. Possibly the most significant photographic title of 2011, this 500 page heavyweight contains 139 contact sheets from 69 photographers – with seminal celebrity and news coverage captured in a manner which few young photographers can even grasp as they complain bitterly that the latest digital SLR can- not manage more than 8 frames per second, or merely has an ISO rating of 12,000. It does, of course, represent a cult of ce- lebrity within the photographic community itself, but it is also highly educational in an era of digital quality and convenience. The shots chosen, by photog- raphers and picture editors alike, would frequently horrify the pixel-peeping professionals of today. Grainy Tri-X Pan, a point of focus with blurry motion shake or simply a lack of clarity, 36 frames sliced into takes of as few as three images – some- times, totally unusable, but the photographer had only instinct and no LCD to refer to. Owning Magnum: Contact
Sheets is great. It can sit on the shelf and look impressive, or on
Whilst Magnum is not a limited edition per se (there are limited edition collectors sets, and 10 Special Editions with all 10 contact sheets) it does appear to be selling quickly, so it’s worth getting as soon as possible.
The series of 10 is:
1 Eve Arnold, Joan Crawford 2 Bruno Barbey, Paris Riots 3 Jonas Bendiksen, Satellites 4 Werner Bischof,
Courtyard of the Meiji Temple 6 Bruce Gilden, Yakuza 7 Philippe Halsman, Dali Atomicus
8 Trent Parke, The Seventh Wave 9 Martin Parr, Last Resort 10 Marc Riboud, Eiffel Tower Painter
The contact sheets are 12 x 16, 50 editions of each. They're not silver halide, they're Archival Quality Giclée (or inkjet to the rest of us). Numbered, Embossed and hand stamped.
Official price for the 50-per- copy limited edition is £325. I have seen them for under £300 on Amazon.
The Super-Limited edition of
10 copies with all 10 contact sheets are £1,500 each. – RTK
