COMIC TIMING With the widely publicised $2.1 million auction price achieved recently by a rare copy of Action Comics No. 1, some investors are contemplating a shift of focus from gold and silver to paper. Vintage comic books – once
considered a niche collectable for nostalgic baby boomers – have become a potent alternative to stocks and bonds. One auctioneer positioning himself to ride the trend is Dan Morphy, whose Denver, Pennsylvania-based Morphy Auctions recently forged an alliance with the specialist dealership Sparkle City Comics of New Jersey. Morphy’s will launch their new Comic
Books division during a February 9-11 Toys & Advertising sale that features 200 comics from a single-owner collection. The top lot, a 1963 The Amazing Spider- Man No. 1 (condition graded 8.5), is expected to bring $25,000-$30,000. Morphy’s first auction dedicated exclusively to comic books will be in the spring.
Right: having wrapped up their most successful year to date, Clarke Auction of Larchmont,

NOTORIOUS GUNS? A pair of vintage guns believed to have been owned and used by the notorious outlaws Bonnie and Clyde will be the centrepiece lots in a firearms consignment atMayo Auction & Realty of Kansas City on January 21. The guns – a .45 caliber Thompson
sub-machine gun and a 12-gauge Winchester model 1897 shotgun – have an interesting provenance: “The consignor’s great-grandfather, who was in law enforcement at the time, was given the two guns by another officer who had seized the weapons after a raid on the pair in Joplin, Missouri, in April of 1933.” The raid occurred at the height of the
duo’s crime rampage that cut a wide swath across middle American during the Great Depression. The raid did not produce any arrests (the two had a knack for staying one step ahead of law enforcement), but it did yield a cache of weapons and a camera. When the film was developed, there were pictures of the couple with some of their guns. One of the photos shows Bonnie
“disarming” Clyde in a staged mock arrest, pointing a Winchester model 1897 pump-action shotgun at his chest. It looks identical to the gun being offered January 21, say the auctioneers. It is estimated at $15,000-20,000. The .45 Tommy gun, estimated at $75,000- 100,000, is thought to have been captured during the same raid.
