NEW WORLD SUNKEN TREASURE The Nuestra Señora de Atocha, a galleon of the New World fleet sailed home for Spain in 1622 laden with 500 pounds of gold, 35 tons of silver bullion, 400 bales of indigo, tobacco, and 30,000 pounds of copper. Also amongst her bounty were the

numerous jewels and secular Spanish silver plate owned by her 48 passengers and 220 crewmen. The Atocha and a companion ship, the Santa Margarita, were wrecked by a hurricane off the coast of Florida on September 4th 1622 and immediate and desperate attempts by the Spanish to rescue the treasure were unsuccessful. Over the next three centuries, the

location and the history of the Atocha was largely forgotten, until the search was taken up by treasure-hunter Mel Fisher in 1963. After two decades, and the tragic loss of his son and daughter- in-law who drowned during the search, he found it on July 20, 1985. Christie’s conducted a two-day sale that included hundreds of artifacts in 1988. Among them were these three silver

bars, one 20ct gold partial ‘finger bar’ and one 14ct gold disc, that will be offered as separate lots in Freeman’s January 25 of English and Continental furniture and decorative arts. They carry a collective estimate of $90,000-125,000. www.freemansauction.com

Above: the January 14-15 Asian Art auction at Brunk Auctions in Asheville, North Carolina on January 14-15 includes this finely carved pale celadon jade altar set catalogued as Qianlong period. The rare survival includes three separate finely carved jade vessels, the tallest 4¾in (12cm) high, each on a separate intricately carved wooden stand, set atop a compound three-piece wooden stand and housed in a wooden case. The estimate is $20,000-30,000. www.brunkauctions.com/
