international events SALES IN THE USA
THE winter auction season across the US promises the usual varied selection of material, plenty of American antiques and collectables but much from Europe and the Far East as well. Here we preview a selection of lots from sales over the next month. We have taken great care compiling this calendar, but we strongly
advise that you check with the saleroom concerned before travelling any distance in case of cancellations or postponements. We also request that auctioneers continue to advise us of any changes. To have dates included in future calendars, please contact Jennifer Daly on +44 (0)20 7420 6643.

SEEING IN THE NEW YEAR New Year’s Day sales are a tradition among America’s regional firms. Among those hosting January 1 sales are Stephenson’s of Southampton, Pennsylvania. The suburban Philadelphia auctioneers
specialise in estate sales and have sourced an array of 18th century Britannia standard silver and an extensive Georg Jensen flatware service from the home of a prosperous family on Philadelphia’s ‘Main Line’. The Jensen sterling flatware set
consists of 189 pieces in the Acorn pattern and includes numerous serving and accessory pieces, most notably an octet of emerald- enamelled salts and spoons. The service has remained in the family (who owned a textile goods company during the early to mid 20th century) since 1941. The estimate is $20,000. The Philadelphia estate
also produced a collection of 18th century English silver that receipts suggest was acquired in the 1940s. They include a group of Queen Anne and George I armorial engraved tea caddies by Anthony Nelme (1720), Edward Gibbons (1726) and Thomas Ash (1708). A pair of Queen Anne Britannia standard tea caddies by Ash (1711) and were purchased by a member of the Philadelphia family in 1944 from Parke-Bernet Galleries.
A European sculpture that was unveiled
in the Los Angeles Scottish Rite Cathedral on Christmas Day 1913 is the highlight of Don Presley’s sale in Orange, California on December 31-January 1. The Carrara marble grouping known
variously as Paetus et Aria, Gaul Killing Himself and His Wife or The Galatian Suicide is a copy of the Hellenistic 3rd Century B.C. original by Epignonos. In 1900, the Italian State purchased the original – and 103 other sculptures – from the royal Boncompagni Ludovisi family for the Pergamum Museo Nazionale at Palazzo Altemps. Now being deaccessioned
by the Scottish Rite Library & Museum, the copy of the famous Greek statue comes with a written history regarding its acquisition by the Masonic fraternity in 1913. An article at the time
describes the statue – a gift from Scottish Rite member V.M. William Rhodes Hervey – as one of the finest marbles in America.“Our Cathedral possesses many treasures which are cherished by our members, but nothing so
beautiful and valuable as the statue of The Gaul and Wife”. The statue, measuring 7ft 10in (2.39m) high on its marble base, is expected to make $40,000-$75,000.
