Rod keeps line to home open
EVERY January, along with many ceramics specialists, London-based porcelain dealer Rod Jellicoe migrates across the Pond for the New York Ceramics Fair from January 17-22 (see page 30). But before that, for his clients both at
home and abroad, his website hosts an annual festive online selling exhibition of 18th century English porcelain. The exhibition started last week and
continues until the end of December. Throughout the month, Rod, one of a growing number of dealers who trade from home via a website, will be updating the site with new offerings. There are more than 40 pieces of
porcelain from several 18th century factories including Worcester, Bow, Liverpool, Derby, Isleworth, Caughley, West Pans, Vauxhall and New Hall.

Farewell kitchen sink
■ Julian switches horses with an auction, leaving him free to promote new artists
WHEN, some years ago, the art dealer Julian Hartnoll bought two young racehorses, he decided to call them John Bratby and Kitchen Sink. While the horses’ racing careers were rather short lived, Julian’s passion for their namesakes has endured and he has been dealing in the work of Bratby and his fellow British post-War ‘kitchen sink’ artists for many years now from his tiny St James’s gallery
on Duke Street. However, January 2012 marks the 50th
anniversary of Julian’s ‘art mongering’, as he likes to call it, and so he is taking the opportunity to rationalise his business by selling the bulk of his stock at auction, so that he may deal more freely in smaller stock and on a commission basis. The single-owner sale will take place
at Holloway’s in Banbury, on February 21, and will include 320 framed paintings and drawings spanning the areas in which Julian has dealt throughout his career. So, alongside a large body of work
by John Bratby (1926-1992) and ’kitchen sink’ artists Edward Middleditch (1923- 1987) and Jack Smith (1928-2011), there will also be works by Francis Newton Souza (1924-2002). Providing a contrast will be a group of

the Victorian pictures in which Julian has dealt widely during his career. Of his decision to hold the sale at Holloway’s, Julian said: “I’m delighted

to be working with Holloway’s. I have known Nick Williams for some time and think he runs an admirable saleroom. “With the advent of the internet,
geographical location is far less important than it used to be and I know he and his team will do a fi rst class job.” Julian also wanted to have a dedicated
sale for his stock, something which he could not do at the major London salerooms due to their minimum sale values. The sale will, of course, take place
after the extension of the Artist’s Resale Right to include deceased artists on January 1, but this cost will be absorbed

by Holloway’s and not passed on to the buyer. “This is the fi rst single-owner sale
we have held at Holloway’s,” said Nick Williams. “Post-War British art is experiencing
a long overdue resurgence of interest, with three post-War exhibitions taking place next year in London alone. Julian has a fantastic eye and I think this sale will excite great interest.” The sale includes two paintings by
Bratby of the artist Jean Cooke – whom Bratby married in 1953 – titled Jean with Teddy Bear, a 1954 oil on board, and Jean Tired and Desk, an oil on canvas from
