Greymark Construction Wins Professional Remodeler Gold Design Award

Greymark Construction was recently awarded “Best Whole House Renovation over $750,000” by Professional Remodeler Magazine.

The designer was Gonzalez Architects and the interior designer was Ginger Barber Design.

What started out as a pool and porch renovation eventually became a whole house remodel as several crises and a change in ownership intervened. During the design phase of the pool and porch project, the roof began to leak, prompting the owners to rethink the project and delay work six months until the funds were available to undertake a whole house remodel.

The plan for the remodel called for adding 2,000 square feet to create additional bedrooms for the family of six and a playroom for the four children on the third floor. What it didn’t include was remodeling the kitchen — until Hurricane Ike arrived during the framing, blowing the tarps off the home and causing extensive water damage to the room.

The kitchen was added to the project, which proceeded near completion, until the homeowners divorced, put the project on hold and sold the home. The new owners decided to continue the project, albeit with some changes. While opting to stay with the Cape Cod style chosen by the previous owners, the new owners also added the pool house to the project, adding a bathroom and a Nana Wall that would allow them to more easily entertain in the home.

Judith Drummond Joins HomeAid Houston

Judith Drummond joined HomeAid on October 3 as administrative assistant.

Originally from Jamaica, Judith moved to Houston to attend the University of Houston, where she received a BBA in Finance and an MBA in Accounting. She plans to sit for the Texas State Board of Accountancy Exam and become a licensed CPA. Prior to HomeAid, Judith spent 10 years at JPMorgan Chase in asset-backed securitizations where she managed portfolios of high yield loans and high risk bonds for Wall Street clients.

Despite her academic achievements and career success, through a series of events, Judith found herself in a situation where she was no longer able to provide for herself and her two daughters. Without family nearby to help, Judith reached out to various agencies in Houston and through those contacts, was led to Gracewood. After meeting with the Gracewood staff and assuring herself that this was the place that could help her get back on her feet, Judith moved in with her children and has resided there since March of 2011.

What Judith is most looking forward to in her new position is making it easier for the staff, associates and volunteers of HomeAid to do what they do. This way, many other families can be as positively impacted as hers has been.

When she isn’t working or studying, Judith enjoys spending time with her two daughters going to parks and libraries as well as attending events with the other Gracewood families.

The Sherwin-Williams Co. has been awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award. The award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, on behalf of the White House, recognizes Sherwin-Williams' innovative new paint formulation, utilizing soybean oil and recycled plastic bottles in the reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).

Chris Connor, chairman and CEO of the company said, "We are pleased that the White House and EPA have recognized our very talented research and development (R&D) team that's committed to innovation and sustainability."

Sherwin-Williams is being recognized in the Designing Greener Chemicals category for Water-Based Acrylic Alkyd Technology. Oil-based "alkyd" paints have high levels of VOC that can become air pollutants as the paint dries. But now the Sherwin-Williams R&D Innovation Excellence team has developed water- based acrylic alkyd paint, made from soybean oil and recycled plastic bottles that cut VOC content by 60%.

The new environmentally friendly Sherwin-Williams paint formula, found in ProClassic Waterbased Acrylic Alkyd, ProMar 200 Waterbased Acrylic Alkyd, and ProIndustrial Waterborne Enamel has eliminated 800,000 pounds of VOCs. In manufacturing the new paint formula, Sherwin-Williams has used 320,000 pounds of soybean oil, 250,000 pounds of PET, and eliminated 1,000 barrels of oil. For more, visit www.sherwin.com.
