Holiday Lights, Green Tree Competition at Calusa Nature Center

T

he Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium, in Fort Myers, is celebrating the holidays with a weeklong series of attractions and a special competition focus- ing on sustainability, all sup- porting the nonprofit institution’s programs, operations and animal care. Holiday Arbor Lights, with 150,000-plus lights and decora- tions, pictures with Santa, kids’ crafts, refreshments and a special

holiday planetarium laser light show, will sparkle from 6 to 9 p.m., December 16 to 23. The highlight of the event is a first-ever green Christmas tree competition, with an awards ceremony on the final night.

Entries in the competition, accepted until December 9, will showcase alternative holiday decoration ideas that embrace a waste reduction, reuse and recycling theme, and will be displayed during the week. Participants can also use new ways of displaying decorations instead of using fresh or artificial trees. The best school entry will receive a visit and presentation by Adam Pottruck, the facility’s director of animal care and education.

Fees: $10, adults; $8, member adults; $5, children 12 and under. Location: 3450 Ortiz Ave. For more information, call 239-275-3435 or visit CalusaNature.com. For more informa- tion on the green Christmas tree competition, call Sarah Davis at 239-590-7679.
