news INDEX December News City tree lights up

for the homeless Switching on of the Christmas lights in Canterbury is always a landmark occasion each year and signifi es the start of the festive season. This year Whitefriars and Canterbury City Partnership have sponsored Canterbury’s Christmas tree in aid of two Kent homelessness charities – Catching Lives and Porchlight. The fabulous 30ft tree in the Longmarket is surrounded by

banners reminding us that there are others less fortunate than ourselves and highlighting what we can each do about this problem on our doorstep. Mark Parry from Porchlight, pictured, said: “We are delighted to be collecting donations alongside Catching Lives and to have such a visible presence in the local community this Christmas. Our work wouldn’t be possible without the support of local people.” Catching Lives manager, Ewan Flack, also pictured said, “This winter is going to be an important time for us. We have already made massive strides, alongside partners such as Porchlight and the council, in tackling this worsening problem in Canterbury and also nationally. “Following a great deal of community support, which we must help continue, we are launching a special Winter Service to achieve even greater results than the signifi cant successes we had last year. “Whilst our service at Canterbury Open Centre will be extended for the period, we will again be running the Canterbury Community Shelter, a rolling night shelter in church and community group halls. The work we do has proven to not only catch lives but save lives and hopefully turn them around for the future. Find out more at www.catchinglives.org

Word to the wise…

How much would you pay to have your Christmas shopping all wrapped up? We can’t help with the buying, but we can help with the paper and bows. There’s a gift wrapping service in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Charity at the Marlowe Arcade on Thursdays from 6pm to 9pm up until 22 December. The fi rst present is free to Whitefriars shoppers, and after that it’s £1 each.

You shall go to the ball!

This year’s Marlowe panto is Cinderella, and if her adventures make you

hanker for a glittering social occasion, there’s always the Lord Mayor of Canterbury’s

Wales’s Royal Regiment Corps of Drums. There’s a three-course dinner, followed by dancing to local band Maize. Why not get together a table (up to 12)? Even if you don’t meet your prince, you might win a prize in the raffl e in aid of the The Lady Mayoress’ Charity

Tickets are £50 and are available from Fiona Balchin at Lord Mayor's Offi ce, Canterbury City Council, Military Road, Canterbury CT1 1YW.
