baubles, look really effective, whether on a shelf, a side table or a mantelpiece. Which room will you be spending a good deal of Christmas day in? The kitchen, more than likely! So extend your festive decorating theme in there, too – hang paper chains across the window, tie winter foliage and ribbons on cupboard doors and along the pelmets, and invest in some super-kitsch but ultra-Christmassy new tea- towels and china to keep you in the right frame of mind – even when you’re wrestling to get a 10kg bird out of the oven... Are guests staying with you over the festive period? Make them feel special by adding a few Christmas touches to their room – a Santa stocking fi lled with a few little extra presents, and a decoration or two around the mirror. And don’t forget that other people’s houses invariably feel colder than your own (if only because you usually do more sitting around when you’re the guest rather then the host!) so add a cosy throw or extra blankets on the bed for them, too.

are mixed and varied this year, with most stores covering all bases and offering everything from the traditional red and golds, through to pink and black or peacock shades of purple and turquoise. Big and bold is one trend that’s new for 2011 though – not in terms of colour, but in terms of scale. Decorations are over-sized and eye-catching, from paper decorations to outrageously large baubles, which look great in a group of three hanging above a table. Don’t overdo it though. You only need a few of these outsize decs for impact – any more and you risk dwarfi ng everything else in the room!
