Deck the halls and every other
corner of your home too, says Sarah Giles
at Christmas, but why not really go to town and add some festive touches to every room in your home this year?

The hallway is the most obvious place to start. Don’t stop
e all focus on decorating our living rooms and the tree
at an ivy wreath on the door and some fairy lights around the porch – carry the theme inside, too, and welcome guests with a real fl ourish. In some ways it makes more sense, space allowing, to have the tree itself in the hallway rather than in the living room – it’s likely to be cooler and it’s less likely to get in the way than it might in
a room where everyone will be gathered on Christmas Day. Plus, of course, it creates a fabulously festive fi rst impression as soon as visitors step inside your home. Finish the look with a festive garland (real or fake) winding up the stairs and, of course, pile up all your pressies beneath the tree. Magazine photos often show Christmas mantelpieces
draped with garlands, but bear in mind that real foliage will last for only a very short time above a roaring log fi re, and fake foliage really isn’t safe suspended above the fl ames. Instead, stick to decorations that will stay well clear of the hearth. A couple of hurricane lanterns with tea lights, surrounded by colourful
