Exhibition about life on the Country Estates From Parlourmaid to Peer: Life on the Country Estates

If you missed St. Barbe Museum’s touring local history exhibition in the summer come and see it again from the 26th November. The exhibition about the local country estates saw almost 1500 visitors over four weekends at village halls and community centres in May and June this year. Full of wonderful images, information and fascinating stories about these extraordinary places, the exhibition at St. Barbe Museum in Lymington will feature even more original maps, photographs and artefacts than before, plus costume on loan from the Hampshire Museum Service.

From Parlourmaid to Peer shows how there is more to country houses than the contrast between the ease of life ‘upstairs’ and the daily grind of work ‘downstairs’. The exhibition explores the wider importance of the country house with its associated land, farms and tenants. The ownership of land gave power, status and influence and so the history of the country house reveals more than the just the lives of the owners or indeed the servants and farmers who worked there. It tells us about how lives were lived, money was made and lost, relationships formed and power was exercised.

Visitors will be able to find out about the great families and estates in the area like Newtown Park, Pylewell and Walhampton, through people’s stories, memories and photographs. Find out about the family connections of Dorothy Morrison who lived at Walhampton, and the local influence of the Burrards who lived there before her. The Weld family of Pylewell were influential in the establishment of the sport of yachting and making Lymington an important centre for boat building.
