WOMENSWEAR
70’S SPORTSWEAR The 70’s is the decade of the mo- ment and spearheads several leading expressions ranging from Boogie Nights club wear to sportswear straight out of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. In recent seasons, we have seen a surge in minimalist sports- wear, specifically at Celine’s Fall 10 collection, which remains a strong reference point emulated by many designers in the industry. However, the 70’s tie-in to sportswear offers much more of an optimistic flavour
with a colour palette of retro tanger- ine, yellow and red, making for a welcome contrast to minimalist neu- trals which have been popular for some time. Colour blocking with these hues is a common expression. Silhouettes also provide more direc- tion than classic sportswear shapes, with the big must have being the flared trouser, commonly paired with a tunic on top. While belted waist- lines move forward, the new mid-calf length is influential particularly for dresses and skirts.
Clockwise from top left: peach panel top and yellow culottes by Sonia Rykiel; beige vest and red trousers by Adam; striped shirt and wrap skirt by Aquilano Rimondi; print dress and cardigan by Marc Jacobs; stripe top and orange skirt by Marc by Marc Jacobs; print jacket, orange shirt and khaki trousers by Etro.
