WINERIES

Kelowna, in Western Canada’s Okanagan Valley is gaining the respect and admiration of oenophiles around the globe. Its wineries are winning Interna- tional Awards and its wines are being snapped up by savvy high-end restaurants. In 2011, five distinct wine trails were established in the area: 24 storied wineries, one meadery, two microbreweries, two cideries and one distillery all within 25 minutes of downtown Kelowna. Can it get any better than that? www.tourismkelowna.com

Situated 30 minutes north of Kelowna, Predator Ridge is one of the premier golf resorts in Canada and among the top golfing destinations in the Okanagan. Both courses should be must-plays on anyone’s bucket list of courses to play in British Co- lumbia. The resort’s 1,200 acres are home to the legendary Predator Course, with links-style play and classic golden fescue; and the newest 2010 ad- dition, The Ridge Course, a mountain-style course, with breathtaking views of Okanagan Lake and the Monashee Mountains, designed by Doug Carrick. You can walk the Predator, but you wouldn’t want to try to do that on the Ridge. Accommodations in the lodge or golf course cottages are first class and the clubhouse restaurant and bar complete a great package. www.predatorridge.com

Kelowna, B.C. PEACHES & CHERRIES

It’s no wonder Kelowna’s food scene mantra is Eat Locally. We arrived in mid-August to roadside stands and U-pick farms brimming with the most delicious peaches and cherries I have ever tasted! This is a city originally pop- ulated by agriculture and orchards – its rich soils, sunny climate, lakes for irrigation and mild winters are all perfectly suited to growing food. As acclaimed chefs are discovering the merits of the city – refined local wines, dedi- cated farmers as neighbours, and fresh, sun- ripened ingredients exploding with taste – Kelowna’s culinary scene is burgeoning.

When you need a break from golf and drinking wine, it’s time to head to the beach or the city’s indoor

H2O water park. There are city parks with beaches, wonderful regional and provincial parks, even dog parks in and around Kelowna, and many come alive in the sum- mer with music, shows and festi- vals. If the weather is a little iffy outside, then head indoors to the

H2O centre that is filled with water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, surfing and more – perfect for children or the young at heart.

In 2011, 16 of Kelowna’s 18 golf courses joined together to market Canada’s new- est golf trail experience. In August I added three more courses to my list of courses played in the area: Kelowna Springs GC, which is great for family golf, The Club at Tower Ranch (pictured) de- signed by Tom McBroom and the nine- hole Pinnacle Course at Gallagher’s Canyon. While you won’t find a course in Kelowna among the top-100 in Canada, the variety more than makes up for it. Visit www.tourismkelowna.com/ do/golf/epic-holes
