The whole situation in Egypt, Yemen, Libya and the other Middle Eastern countries that have seemingly fallen (are falling) to the “will of the people” strikes me as a bit strange.

The transitional government leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil says that Sharia law would be the “basic source” of legislation in the country and that existing laws to the contrary would be nullified. (source FOX News).

This takes us back to the time when modern day Iran, ruled by the Shah, an iron fisted dictator was toppled. While the Shah was a terrible dictator, he was forward thinking in many ways. He extended suffrage and many other basics rights to women and supported the growth of a strong middle class. Iran was one of our closest allies yet became an enemy to the Western world. Islamic extremism under Khomeini and the new regime created the climate of violence with a hatred of non-Muslims that has us in bed with Homeland Security today.

While I cannot compare Iran of the pre 1979 era to Libya, I can draw some inference as to what will now take place. Women will be required to wear the chador. They will have no rights - not even the right to be in public unless escorted by their husband, brother or father. That’s Sharia law. Civilization will not leap forward in enlightment, but rather will fall back to the dark ages. The dictators were cruel, iron fisted and terrible to their people, but what can those people and the world expect now?

“MYSTICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE GOSPEL OF THOMAS” Shirley Chambers

Saturday, November 12, 10 AM - 4 PM $75

This workshop presents a comprehensive understanding of one of the most important discoveries of modern times. The Gospel of Thomas was discovered in 1945 among texts found at Nag hammadi in upper Egypt. What is different about the Gospel of Thomas is that it focuses specifically upon the sayings of Jesus, beginning with “Whosoever discovers the interpretation of these says shall not taste death.”

The text used for this workshop will be The Gospel of Thomas, by Mavin Meyer and can be purchased from the Center’s bookstore.
