pitals and clinics are frequently contaminated with potential- ly dangerous bacteria. In their study, Ohl and his team took 180 swab cultures from 43 privacy curtains twice a week for three weeks. The researchers also marked the curtains to keep track of when they were changed. Tests detected Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, including the especially dangerous methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), as well as various species of Enterococci, gut bacteria, some resis- tant to the newer antibiotic vancomycin. The study found significant contamination that occurred very rapidly after new curtains were places. Of the 13 privacy curtains placed during the study, 12 showed contamination with in a week. Virtually all privacy curtains tested — 41 out of 43 — were contaminated on at least one occasion. R

pet food, yet while a growing number of people want raw milk for themselves, the state turns a blind eye. Nothing prohibits drinking raw milk. State officials acknowledge that there’s an underground supply chain. People say it’s a creamier, purer and healthier alternative to pasteurized milk. This year, about a dozen more farms statewide, a total of 46, registered to sell raw milk as “commercial feed.” There’s no way to tell how much is bought for human consumption. “It’s legal to consume. It’s not like a drug that you can get arrested for possession or distribution,” said Pete Kennedy, president and attorney for Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, a national organization that advocates for the right to buy and consume raw milk.H
