HEALING ARTS Flu Season Is Here! By Li Hua, L. Ac. TCMD.

Fall and flu season are here. The weather is changing frequently from suddenly cold to hot and back again. Weather change is a real challenge for the human body and may lead to illness. The air is going from dry, cooler, cold and cold wet. Germs, bacteria and flu virus are active, and the pollen also is full in the air. This causes tiredness, fever, runny nose, soar throat, cough, upset stomach, abnormal bowel movements etc. The flu virus may cause the organs to become inflamed and may even be life threatening. There are many ways to prevent get- ting the flu.

Acupuncture is a natural healing art to balance the whole body, release stress, and boost the immune system. Natural Chinese herbs have also helped a lot of people avoid flu, common colds and pollen allergies.

To prevent the flu, common cold, and pollen allergies, wash the hands often as well as the face, nose and ears. Boil apple cider vinegar in the home one to three times a week during the flu season to clean the air and kill the germs and virus naturally. Go to bed early and keep a regular sleep schedule. Being well rested keeps the immune system strong. Use hot water to soak your feet before going to bed at night.

Detox the body and stay relaxed. Add seasonal veg- etables and fruits to your meals. These include carrots, turnips, squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, cabbage, napa (Chinese cabbage), garlic, ginger, onions, cilantro, pears, apples, walnuts, almonds, peanuts, sesame seeds and black beans. Exercise regularly. Do Yang exercises (high intensity exercises) in the morning. Do Yin exercis- es (low intensity exercises) in the afternoon or evening. Have acupuncture treatments four times a year when the seasons are changing, or at least during the flu season. This will improve the immune system to help prevent flu, the common cold, and pollen allergies naturally. Some people, especially younger, or older people, may want to wear a mask in public places in flu season and also avoid crowds.

Here is one example of how Chinese medicine helped a family in flu season.

Oracle 20/20 November

Cindy, a five year-old little girl got the common cold often and easily. She constantly coughed and suffered with earaches and a runny nose. She was moody. She was a picky eater. It was hard to put her to sleep at night. Cindy’s mom felt very tired due to taking care of Cindy. One day, Cindy came with her mother for acupuncture treatment. I asked her mother many questions about Cindy. Her tongue and pulse were checked. It was found that she had disharmony of the liver and the spleen, the wetness was high, her Yin was low. I did needle-less acupuncture for Cindy. She did not cry. Meanwhile, some special food recipes were given to speed up Cindy‘s healing. After another two times acupuncture treatment, Cindy changed into a different healthy girl. Her face color was much better. She was not sick any more. She was not moody at all. She was more cooperative and obeyed her mother. Since that time, Cindy came back to boost her immune system every summer and she has not gotten sick in the winter time. Cindy also had good report from her school. Cindy’s mom also felt less stress and did not get colds from Cindy very often after that either.
