New Season Kicks Off at Naples Botanical Garden

off the Naples Botanical Garden’s boun- tiful programming season. Along with a plant sale, planting and Lifelong Learning presentations, the all-day November 12 and 13 events include a dog walk, yoga, art show and live musical performances. On Saturday, music performed by Elements of Jazz, from Miami, will fill the air from 1 to 4 p.m. Bala Vinyasa will lead a yoga session from 10 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, followed by Treebo, performing jazz music, from 2 to 4 p.m.


The WONDER Program: The Edible


Garden, will inform and entertain children and their families from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., November 20, to be followed by five other special monthly events through April.


Fees: Free or regular garden admission for WONDER Program and most November 12-13 events. Dog Walk: non-member dogs are $7.95. Taste of the Arts Features Visual Artists

he second annual Taste of the Arts, showcasing Lee County’s upcoming cultural season, takes place from 4 to 8 p.m., November 13, at the Alliance for the Arts, in Fort Myers. The event will feature visual displays by artists from ArtFest Fort Myers, Art of the Olympians, BIG ARTS and the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Attendees can meet the artists and organizations, while enjoying three stages of live performances, art exhibits and refreshments.

team of students with Skyline Elementary School, in Cape Coral, took first place for their school in the Love Your Mother Challenge, earning the grand prize of a 400-square-foot garden from Heartland Gardens, a nonprofit based in Fort Myers. Thirty-one teams of 318 youngsters in the Lee County School District participated in the contest.


Skyline Elementary had 7,028 points, Orange River Elementary School was second with 6,948 and Bayshore Elementary School had 4,302 points for third place. The Challenge concentrated on physical activity, reducing meal plate portions, and reusing and recycling. The new garden at Skyline will help educate the children about nutrition and where food comes from.


Heartland Gardens offers hands-on, fun classes and workshops, available to the public at cost, on organic gardening, food preservation, nutrition and self-sus- tainability. The organization also offers work/study programs and scholarships. Its charitable goal is to facilitate the construction of 500 gardens in Lee County to help spread health, wellness and vitality to the community.
