Special event marks Theatr Colwyn relaunch


A special event has taken place to celebrate the reopening of Colwyn Bay’s new-look Teatr Colwyn, following the completion of a £738,000 refurbishment project. Te property, which is one of the oldest


operating civic theatres in Wales, received £500,000 from the Welsh Assembly Government towards the programme. Teatr Colwyn’s upstairs bar has now


been relocated to the foyer, while a new box office has been created along with office space. Disabled access has also been improved at the town’s arts venue.


New Year start for Swansea project


Swansea’s Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is to close to the pub- lic from 30 October ahead of a £6m revamp and extension of the cultural attraction. Preparations for the scheme


are due to commence in November in order to enable the main phase of work to begin in the New Year, which will lead to an increase in exhibition space. A new lecture and com-


munity room; a reading and resource area; and upgraded facilities for schools and col- leges are also proposed, along with a new storage and conservation area. During its closure, a series of workshops for

Glasgow arts venues secure further funding


Te Scottish Government has announced additional funding towards plans for the renovation of two Glasgow arts venues ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Scottish Opera has been awarded £4m


worth of investment towards an upgrade of the city’s Teatre Royal Glasgow, which will include improved front-of-house areas. Meanwhile, £7m has been allocated to


the city’s Royal Scottish National Orchestra in order to help fund a new extension to the Royal Concert Hall, which will feature a new 600-seat venue.


J P Morgan announces new arts investment


Investment bank J P Morgan will invest £600,000 as part of a collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery; the National Teatre; and the Southbank Centre. Te J P Morgan Signature Series is set to


comprise a one-year programme, which will support the work of the three arts organi- sations, while also organising activities for its clients and guests. Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt said: “JP


Morgan has done a huge amount to support the arts and remains a beacon for corpo- rate philanthropy in the UK.”

ACW announces Power of the Flame launch


Arts Council of Wales (ACW) has announced the launch of the Power of the Flame legacy project, which will comprise five major proj- ects to mark the London 2012 Games. Legacy Trust UK is funding the Power of the Flame initiative, which is set to see a range


of cultural activities and events take place throughout the country. ACW chair Dai Smith said: “Te aim of this


ambitious programme of events and activities is to inspire and engage with the children and young people of Wales.”


‘Strong financial year’ for National Theatre


The National Theatre (NT) has announced that 2010-11 was a “strong financial year”, with its income increasing by nearly 9.5 per cent compared with the previous year. In its annual report, the


body revealed its produc- tion of War Horse at the New London Theatre generated £13.9m at the box office and a surplus of £2.9m alone. Attendances for War Horse


averaged at 97 per cent dur- ing the 12-month period, with attendances at shows staged at its South Bank home averag- ing 90 per cent in 2010-11. Te surplus generated by War Horse has now
