Great ideas, great careers, great leaders are born here.
From its founding through the present day, Springfield College has had a profound impact on society, culture, and the health and well-being of people around the world. James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891. William Morgan, Class of 1894, invented the game of volleyball. Dr. Luther Gulick was among the first scholars to promote the role of physical fitness in overall health. Dr. Peter Karpovich pioneered physical education and sport science.
These and many other Springfield College faculty and graduates have been leaders in the fields of health, sports, movement studies, human and social services, education, business, and the arts and sciences. They have been founders and leaders of such organizations as the American College of Sports Medicine, the Camp Fire Girls of America, the National Parks and Recreation Association, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Jacob’s Pillow, and more. They have been, and continue to be, involved in the Olympics, from competitors to coaches to organizers. They have been in the forefront of advancing sports for women, and have conducted research on many health and physical fitness initiatives.
In more than 60 countries worldwide, nearly 50,000 Springfield College alumni are living proof that a balanced education leads to a productive, successful, and fulfilling life. If you’re ready to dedicate yourself—spirit, mind, and body—we promise you the education of a lifetime.
