ILSA Chapter Happenings

local attorneys in the field, and for foreign LL.M. students to get a feel for a real American sport.

UMKC Law is fortunate to field three international moot court teams this year, with students compet- ing in the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law, and the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition. ILS also hopes to send three members to ILSA’s International Law Week- end in New York City this October.

In November, ILS will be hosting a “happy hour” at a local restaurant for students, professors, attor- neys, and judges. This provides students with the opportunity to meet practicing attorneys from the international field in a more relaxed, friendly, and fun environment.

On March 19-23, 2012, ILS will host UMKC’s An- nual International Law Week. The week begins with an international buffet fundraiser, where ILS members bring various dishes, from gnocchi to home cooked chicken tikka masala. The luncheon is open to the community (for a small fee), and at- tracts students, professors, and staff from across campus. The week will also feature a symposium featuring law professors and local attorneys dis- cussing Arab Spring and its effects on American security and trade. The panel discussion will be an open forum for questions and answers, giving stu- dents the opportunity to learn more about the legal issues surrounding the changes sweeping across the Middle East. UMKC’s International Law Week will end with a benefit concert to help raise funds for the famine crisis in East Africa.

This year is an opportunity for ILS to grow and expand our horizons. With new faculty, and mem- bers from all around the world, ILS is optimistic and enthusiastic for an amazing year, and a suc- cessful run in multiple competitions. Students may find out more about ILS at UMKC through the School of Law home page. ILS is always looking for new, motivated and passionate students want- ing to pursue a career in international law.

MONTERREY ILSA CHAPTER

Facultad Libre de Derecho de Monterrey Monterrey, Mexico

Alejandra Huerta, President

The Facultad Libre de Derecho de Monterrey ILSA Chapter was established in August 2011. With al- most 150 members, it is one of the largest Chap- ters in the world. Our members include students, teachers, parents and administrative personnel from our school.

During our first meeting, we held elections for the Executive Committee and gave a brief overview of the events planned for this semester. Three students were elected to serve on the Executive Committee, and together will lead the Chapter. The meeting was presided by Mr. Fernando Villarreal Gonda, Academic Dean, International Private Law and Comparative Studies Professor, and Member of ILSA. Witnessing the voting procedure was Mr. Gerardo Puertas Gómez and Mr. José Gerardo Guzmán Rodríguez, Constitutional Law and Ethics Professor and Civil Law Professor, respectively.

Even though our Chapter is new, we are proud to announce the enthusiasm and acceptance of the idea of an ILS Chapter has had within our school. For this current semester, we are planning activi- ties consisting of a general meeting and a dinner with recognized people from the international law branch in the vicinity of Monterrey. In addition, we hope to host several small debate sessions and seminars during the semester to discuss upcom- ing events and relevant international news and topics.

We are still looking to obtain the know-how to manage and successfully running an ILS Chapter and above all, on having a favorable response from our Chapter and from our society. We have been off to an amazing start and hope that this Chapter lives up to its expectations in fulfilling our objective to grow through the study and sharing of interna- tional law.
