NEW YORK LAW SCHOOL ILS
New York Law School New York, New York USA James Foster, ILS Member
The New York Law School’s International Law Society has already had a very active fall. In additional to several members being selected to represent the school at two upcoming inter- national moot court competitions, the group hosted lectures and a career forum, and even helped welcome His Excellency Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, who gave a special address about the United Nations and the Rule of Law.
In late August the school kicked off its C.V. Starr Lecture series with, “Islamic Law and Finance: Past Developments, Present Controversies, Fu- ture Prospects.” Students were eager to hear from Frank E. Vogel, an independent scholar and consultant who taught Islamic law at Harvard Law School for 20 years and held the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Chair.
In early September the school’s Center for Inter- national Law announced its plan to send teams to both the Willem C. Vis International Com- mercial Arbitration Moot and the Phillip C. Jes- sup International Law Moot Court Competition. The ILS spread the word and helped organize the try-out process and eventually two teams of very capable students were selected. The Vis competition is held annually in Vienna, Aus-
tria and features teams of four students from schools around the world. The Jessup Moot Court Competition consists of regional rounds with the Northeast preliminaries held in New York and the finals held in Washington, D.C. The two teams representing New York Law School will look to build on the success they achieved last year and have high expectations for advanc- ing far into the competitive rounds.
On October 4, the ILS, in conjunction with the school’s Center for International Law, organized a lecture entitled, “The United Nations and the Rule of Law,” delivered by His Excellency, Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the UN. Dur- ing his address to a packed audience, the Sec- retary-General spoke about why the United Na- tions is involved in the rule of law field, what the United Nations has learned over the last two decades of work in this area, and what changes need to happen to make further progress. Af- ter the lecture the ILS hosted a dinner for its prestigious guest and several lucky students, most of whom seized the opportunity to ask the Secretary-General more in-depth questions about many of the issues presently before the Security Council.
On October 20, the American Society of Inter- national Law and New York Law School hosted a career fair to coincide with ILSA’s International Law Weekend. The unique forum brought law students and new lawyers together with expe- rienced practitioners to explore opportunities for employment in international law. Students
