Welcome
In last year’s review, we explained our mission to build self-reliant and sustainable housing organisations capable of meeting the housing needs of poor communities.
In working towards our mission over the last year, we have focused on expanding
the number of partners we support, leading to three new partnerships in Angola, Nepal and Kenya (see pages 11-14). On the ground, our partners are delivering land, housing, water and sanitation (see pages 5-10) and engaging with governments to challenge and change policies and practices that hinder progress in tackling urban poverty.
Looking forward, we believe that our links with the UK social housing sector, which have continued to strengthen this year, will become even more important. In India and Tanzania, our support for rental housing programmes and the development of social housing policies, requires a closer working relationship with housing associations, both in the UK and overseas. Having formed an alliance with our counterpart organisations in Canada, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands, we hope that these new relationships will improve our work as we share experiences, learning and resources.
We are positive about the future. Although the journey from a small social movement to a self-reliant organisation takes time and is not without its challenges, it is reading the stories of people like Constansia (see page 6) that remind us how fortunate we are to work with partners and communities who, despite the challenges, demonstrate resilience and courage. This compels us to be ambitious about our vision and mission for the millions of people still in need of support.
Once again, I would like to thank all of our members, trustees, friends and volunteers for their unfailing commitment and support. I look forward to reporting on our further success this time, next year.
