A year of support
Throughout the year, we have received tremendous support from organisations and individuals across the UK who have held events, taken part in sporting challenges and shown their ongoing commitment to global housing issues.
Supporter highlights:
Staff and board members at Guinness Northern Counties raised over £1,500 during the year through a series of fundraising events. A summer of cycling-based fundraising included a cycle to work day for staff and a Tour de France sweepstake.
We were thrilled to be nominated as Sitra’s charity of the year. Staff at Sitra, which provides policy, advice, training and consultancy support to the housing sector, raised over £1,000 during the year. Staff members held events including cake sales, team challenges and quizzes. Some employees went the ‘extra mile’, running in the Birmingham half marathon and even climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!
Housing associations and suppliers from across the Midlands came together for a dinner and dance at the National Housing Federation’s Partnership in Housing event in July. Held at the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham, the dinner raised over £16,000 for Homeless International.
Two regional dinners hosted by 3DK Solutions during the year were an opportunity to engage senior staff and board members from local housing associations with our work. The dinners took place in Shipley and the Forest of Arden and were sponsored by Morrison and The Seddon Group, respectively. Further dinners are already planned for the coming year.
Peter Cleland and Simon Davis, aka ‘The Flight of the Bumbling Wasps’, buzzed their way from the UK to Mongolia in the Mongol Rally. Travelling in a 1.2 litre Daewoo Kalos, the team drove through Europe, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia before reaching UlaanBaatar in Mongolia in August. Supported by friends and colleagues back in the UK, Peter and Simon raised almost £3,000 for Homeless International.
Homeless International supporter and former head of the Tenant Services Authority, Peter Marsh, raised over £6,000 with his year-long sailing voyage, which began in April 2010. Peter was joined by family and friends as he sailed 2,000 miles around the UK.
Paul Diggory, Chief Executive of North Wales Housing Association, raised over £1,600 running in the Nottingham half marathon in September. Paul, a former President of the Chartered Institute of Housing, said: “I was staggered by what a great community experience the event was, but the whole effort was so rewarding in so many ways. Knowing that the money raised was going to improve someone’s living conditions in a less fortunate part of the world was a real motivator.”
Other events during the year included: a Dundee fundraising dinner hosted by Angus Housing Association, raising over £12,000; West Mercia Housing Group’s golf day and dinner which raised a fantastic £9,000, and; collections onboard easyJet flights by caterers Gate Gourmet, raising over £4,000.
One Basis Point Challenge During the year, we asked housing associations across the UK to take part in our ‘One Basis Point Challenge’ to support
our Guarantee Fund, which helps our overseas partners secure finance from local banks. The Challenge raised an extra £230,500 for the Fund, which is now valued at over £980,000.
